Here at Bridgnorth there are many activities involving volunteer staff.

We have a ticket office, gift shop, on-train buffet, on-train Venturer Sunday diner, carriage restoration, plus permanent way, motive power, signalbox and signalling departments all based here. We have people from all walks of life, and some may not even be train enthusiasts, but enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

Refurbishment and maintenance is a huge task at Bridgnorth - some of our infrastructure dates back over a century, and we have a long thin site with difficult access, housing all the different departments which exist on the SVR. All that, and we're the terminus station, and the original birthplace.

To find out about becoming a Severn Valley Railway volunteer, have a chat with any of our staff, or email us at mailbox@bridgnorthstation.co.uk

Anthony Booth is our Assistant Station Master

You are likely to find him on the station most days, as he's in the lucky situation of being both retired, and domiciled in a cosy cottage very near to the station.

Anthony turns his hand to painting, guarding, signalling, platform duty, putting up bunting, and so many other jobs that crop up around the site. He's a VERY generous bar-profits supporter in his spare time, and keen canaller, and he makes a very fine Santa's Helper.

Mary works for the railway on week day mornings, and is a fount of knowledge about what happens where at Bridgnorth station. She is likely to be the voice on the phone if you call on week days.

If you can't find Anthony on a week day, Mary is likely to know when he will next be on site, or can pass on your message.

These magnificent gentlemen are usually on duty on our platforms on Saturdays, as they so much enjoy working together.

They are friendly and knowledgeable, and will do all in their power to help you enjoy your visit.

A different group of magnificent gentlemen - well, their attire is in this shot! When not celebrating a wedding, they are on the footplate, as drivers and firemen.

You can see they are friendly, and very knowledgeable about their craft.

Trevor-the-Paint hard at work in the waiting room

Competence with a paint brush is a HUGELY valued skill at this station at the moment, and if you don't yet have it, we'll train you! (Ooops, sorry!). While the waiting room is now finished (yippee), there is still a whole platform one of railings, and all the window frames, door frames, doors - plenty of painting still to do. Terms are very reasonable: no pay, free tea/coffee, all equipment supplied, and a very friendly bunch to work with.

A trainee fireman?

We welcome enthusiastic, sensible young people aged 14 up, to learn 'the ropes' from their elders. Many of our youngsters are the offspring of regular volunteers, but we also have some whose interest was not inherited, and as there aren't THAT many of us with young families, we're quite glad about that!

What were they watching? - A demonstration specially arranged to entertain and impress for its inventiveness in unexpected circumstances.

Here you see Venturer dining car crew, carriage restorers, electricians, and MPD, taking in the view.

Relaxing Mode - after a hard day's work..

This motley collection of smiling faces represents quite a range of jobs: guard, driver, electrician, Venturer, loco painter, carriage restorer, signaller.. and all with a liking for good beer!
